This line comes from Darwish's poem "Kan yanqusna hather" or "We Were Missing a Present," where Darwish laments the eternal liminality of exile, being at once of both and neither. These lines aren't about being in between, but rather being unable to claim (or reclaim) either heritage, despite longing. Darwish was never counted in the Israeli census, so he and his family were actually considered "present-absent aliens"--simultaneously existing and in exile.
